about

Cid Poitier returns to Translation with the ‘Afrique’ EP, a collection of renegade tribal rhythms that showcase his ability to create forward-thinking 170 sound system music that bridges the familiar with the unexplored. Kicking things off with a touch of roots rebellion, title-track ‘Afrique’ invokes the heat of the jungle as meticulous percussion, warm basslines, and eerie vocals provide the audio narrative for a journey seemingly inspired by Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Next, ‘Righteousness’ takes things a bit deeper, fusing chopped breaks with spooky dub-wise reverberations to magnificent effect. ‘Influx’ is an energetic number spearheaded by a storming kick drum that punches through a blend of flanged and mischievous mid-bass effects. It’s back to the dungeon on ‘Roots Persepctive’, whose brooding vocals and ominous atmospherics evoke the notion of an impending danger. Last but not least, ‘Hear Dis’ is tribal thunder incarnate - a mammoth track destined to melt minds and floors alike, and a fitting conclusion to a weighty EP.
